RICHMOND BY-ELECTION,1/12/16

Triggered by Zac Goldsmith's resignation over the Government's decision to go ahead with a third runway at Heathrow it would seem our (very-long-term) proposal for a hub airport located within the Thames Estuary are bearing fruit, as:

'We are the only party supporting the Thames Estuary as the right solution to the Heathrow problem.

There are a few people on the streets telling us they are going to vote for us. With more support it could grow' (quote).

There are added benefits to an estuary airport:

A short-haul seaplane company, similar to Loch Lomond Seaplanes, to fly passengers between London and Osea Island, could be set up in the River Thames Estuary, to ‘ferry’ passengers from the City to an estuary airport, constructively using London’s River (‘Return Of The Seaplane Lets Stylish Flyers Make A Splash’ (Times, March 14th, 2016)) http://www.lochlomondseaplanes.com/skye-seaplanes;

using reclaimed land, possibly new dams could be built within the Thames Estuary, so as to provide hydro-electric power to local communities, a truly ‘green’ alternative to Hickley Point.

At a previous CPA meeting I suggested that more use could be made of Stansted, Gatwick and Luton Airports as an immediate short-term measure.

A) they have direct rail links to the capital;
B) doing so would lessen the pressure / calls for a third runway at Heathrow:

Sir, if .. thirty-two airlines are waiting for slots at Heathrow, that does not prove the case for a runway at Gatwick.  .. (It) would make more sense to make full use of our existing London airports.  Stansted is at present only half-full, Luton only 55% full.  The thirty-two airlines could find slots there tomorrow: they would have to wait at least ten years for a new runway to be built at Gatwick (Brendon Sewill, Chairman, Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign, Times Letters, June 8th, 2016)’.

Passenger movements in millions
From the above it can be clearly seen that Gatwick, Luton and Stansted Airports are underused, especially for handling cargo.

PRO-ISRAEL DEMONSTRATION

Feeling a little nervous - albeit having committed the morning into the hands of the '..Lord strong and mighty in battle' I headed for the above, taking place opposite Downing Street, where the Israeli PM, Benjamin Netanyahu, was due to meet with David Cameron.

Interspersed with the usual 'Free, free Palestine' the ZF's own Ida Symonds megaphoned us and the opposition with cries proclaiming Israel's allowing freedom of worship, women's and others' rights.

All the time there echoed the Irish jig tune for a pro-Israel Irish dancer, though as one of my colleagues remarked there should have been played Jewish music.  This was complemented, however, by Jewish chants from the main pro- group.

'Free Palestine' flags and badges passed me: in response, eg, to my 'Palestine is free - for Jews, Christians and Muslims' the worst responses I received were expletives.  A pro-Palestinian clergyman passed through us, the pro-group, not even answering my assertion that Jesus (Yeshua) shall be returning to Israel (in judgement not only for individuals but against nations who have come against Israel).

Later on I confonted four orthodox Jews who apparently stood for Judaism against Zionism: in response to my pointing out that, were it not for the State of Israel Orthodox Jews such as them could not have freedom to worship I received a looking-away - in shame?

The opposition could not answer questions about Syrian persecution of either its own - or the Palestinians.
Just earlier, when against all the police advice the opposition occupied the middle traffic island and the pavement close to Downing Street (and they're against Israeli 'occupation'?) and some of our number followed them, the mood turned a little ugly, near-violent confrontations took place and at least one 'opposition' member was taken away by the police.  It all brought traffic to a standstill sometimes, if not a slow crawl.  Needless to say had Netanyahu turned up the mood would have turned even uglier ..

A BEACON WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY

Last Sunday, attended Beeches Baptist Church at which the speaker declared that the church had a valuable role to play (quote /unquote) in reflecting God's love in our community.
